THIS IS THE WAY THAT I AM FEELING RIGHT NOW.
Motherhood can feel so overwhelming.
There are some moments where motherhood doesn’t feel natural to me, then I reflect and what is not natural is that we carry so much on our shoulders while our hands are full.
I love my kids, but I really don’t like what came with motherhood in many other aspects.
The messy house which appears to be impossible to keep clean and tidy for longer than a minute, the guilt, the exhaustion, the lack of sleep, the constant noise of trantum, or even over joy, the constant loud noise, the lack of recognition, the loneliness and the feeling of being a married single mum, because when I look around in my messy house I’m always the unique adult, most of the time.
Social media is full of messages saying “you are enough “, but you don’t always feel that way, even if you carry more than ever, if you do more than ever before, even if you are the everything for someone else, some days you just feel that this is too much...
So today I’m not the midwife mama, today I’m just the mama.
Tomorrow will be another day, even if in some ways it would likely look the same.

NATURAL DOES NOT ALWAYS MEAN EASY

☺️ Hi I’m Ruth, the midwife behind @bumptobabyacademy, join me for a daily post from pregnancy to baby care.

Your body took over and during your pregnancy has grown your baby.
Believe it or not, if your mind allows
your body, then during birth your body will take over and bring your baby into this world.

During postpartum your body will heal and recover and bringing you back your “previous body“.

So we expect the same during the breastfeeding journey. But this time, it seems like my body forgot to guide me.
Yes, your body (in most of the cases) is ready to keep taking care of your baby, it will keep nourishing and growing your baby, but the rest of the tasks is up to you.
There you are, with a tiny and so fragile looking new human, after going to the most intense travel of your life, birth. There they are your breasts. The ones that you never used for this purpose.
There they are, the tons of the mums who couldn’t do it in the back of your mind.
There we are ... the lack of support in many cases...
And now... just try to do it, try to say to a mama that just gave birth that breastfeeding is natural or easy.

This combination of factors makes breastfeeding an incredible challenge!
Then the frustration came, the doubt takes over and you think that you have failed.
But no, you didn’t fail, the system failed you because it didn’t provide the support that you need.
The society failed, because breastfeeding keeps being a taboo.
Face this journey with patience, with courage, be certain that you can do it (in most of the cases) and you just need time to learn how.
⁉️Was breastfeeding easier or more challenging than you expected?
⁉️What didn’t expect in this journey?

THE PERFECT TEAM .
.
⁉️Have you ever asked this question to yourself?
.
❤️ If you are pregnant, check out the antenatal-hypnobirthing online course in bio ☺️ for an informed and better birth experience 🤩!
.

😬 In almost all cases, a baby’s head is perfectly able to fit through the birth canal.
🙌🏽 You and your baby are the perfect ever team to go through this journey!
👶🏾 MY BABY:
- 👶🏻 Believe it or not babies participate actively during birth. Babies can wriggle into a good position, they twist and turn, and sometimes they push with their feet.
- 👶🏼 Babies have a head designed to fit through the birth canal, their skull isn’t a fixed bony structure. It is divided into several plates. This allows the plates to move and overlap as the head is squeezed through the pelvis and vagina.
- 👶🏿 That means... your baby’s head can adjust to fit the size of your body 👏🏻.
.
🤰🏾MAMA 🤰🏼:
- 🤰🏻The pelvis is not a fixed bony structure. The symphysis pubis which connects the two halves of the pelvis is made up of fibrocartilage.
- 🤰🏼During birth, this joint is flexible and allows more space for the baby to move through the pelvis.
- 🤰🏾The baby needs to negotiate the different layers of the pelvis in order to pass through the vaginal opening.
- 🤰🏼At this point, the size of the baby’s head is less important than the position the baby is in. If the smallest part of the baby’s head points first, the journey will be easier and quicker 🙌🏽.
- 🤰🏾To be mobile and work mind and body together will help the baby to adopt this position, making the baby as smallest as possible 👍🏼.
HORMONES
- 🤰🏻Relaxin: This hormone encourages the ligaments in your body to relax and loosen, in preparation for giving birth.
- 🤰🏾Estrogen helps the tissues of the vagina to stretch. This increases blood flow to the vagina, so the connective tissues can expand during the second stage, when your baby is descending.
- 👶🏿 As the baby’s head begins to move further down, the perineum starts to stretch.
.
♥️ Your body has been designed to give birth to your baby ♥️, and that’s absolutely incredible!!

⁉️How big was your baby when he/she was born?

OVER...
☺️ Hi I’m Ruth, the midwife behind @bumptobabyacademy, join me for a daily post from pregnancy to baby care.

🥵 OVERHEATED:
Babies and children have less developed abilities to regulate their internal temperature, there is always a chance your baby will get too hot, no matter the season of the year.
The most common signs are:
They Feel Warm To The Touch
Their Skin Is Red
nausea and vomiting as signs of heatstroke
They Have A Rapid Heartbeat
They're Lethargic Or Unresponsive
They Vomit
They Seem Dizzy Or Confused
♥️ If you are pregnant, check out the antenatal-hypnobirthing online course in bio ☺️ for an informed and better birth experience! You are going to love it!
🍼 OVERFED
Bottle feed (with formula or breast milk) babies are at a higher risk of overfeeding. Bottles allow a free flow of milk, so the baby keeps getting a constant drip of milk even when they are full. Breast fed babies are usually not overfed (The baby gets breast milk only when they suckle, which makes overfeeding almost impossible in such cases)
The common signs are:
* Gassiness or burping.
* Frequent spit up.
* Vomiting after eating.
* Fussiness, irritability or crying after meals.
* Gagging or choking
* Not sucking at the bottle nipple or turning away from the nipple.
Demand for more than 32oz (1064ml) of formula/breast milk a day: According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), a baby demanding more than 32oz (1064ml) of formula or breast milk in a day is unusual and should be checked by a doctor.

😴😭OVERTIRED
A baby is considered overtired when they have been awake for longer than their little bodies can tolerate. This activates a stress response, including the release of hormones like cortisol, that makes it even harder for baby to settle.
The most common signs are:
* Yawning.
* Rubbing their eyes or pulling their ears
* Whimpering. ...
* Lack of interest.
* Zoning out
* Becoming clingy.
* Less social and less engaged
⁉️ What the most common “over” for your baby?

GROWING LIFE INSIDE IS TIRING

.
☺️ Hi I’m Ruth, the midwife behind @bumptobabyacademy, join me for a daily post from pregnancy to baby care.

🙋🏻‍♀️ I personally always struggled with this.
Especially during the first trimester when in most of the cases your body doesn’t show much suggesting that you are expecting, but you are feeling completely exhausted.
🤰🏼 Pregnancy is not an illness, yes, it is not but it is a real challenge to our body requiring an incredible amount of energy.

♥️ If you are pregnant, check out the antenatal-hypnobirthing online course in bio ☺️ for an informed and better birth experience! You are going to love it!

🤰🏽You try to keep your life how it was before 2 lines on the pregnancy test changed your life for ever, you try to join the yoga pregnancy class, to walk because they say you should keep active, to swim because it’s good for the back pain, you keep on top of the house, your job, your other kids if you have some, and you are making all preparations you feel are needed for the new love of your life that is growing inside of you...
👶🏾👶🏼👶🏻And all of that without realising most of the time that you are doing something INCREDIBLE!!!
😴😴😴 So yes, you deserve a REST!!!

☺️ Even if that means you can’t join every yoga class and you aren’t always on top of things with your job, home and life. IT IS OK!!!!
It is not expected!!
😴😴😴 Rest, rest, rest as much as you can, because you are already doing something every second, something ENORMOUS!!!

THE BEGINNING OF BREASTFEEDING.
My heart is with every mum that has heard over and over about the benefits of breastfeeding, but was battling this journey on her own.
The beginning of breastfeeding is full of doubts.

The lack of trust in the capacity of our body to be able to nourish the little one , makes it seem we have forgotten that we have already nourished her/him until her/he was born.
There is often a lack of time given by the medical staff, and breastfeeding requires time, it’s a learning process, for you and for your baby.
The lack of control, the unknown of how much your baby is actually getting doesn’t really help.

Soon after birth, you may already feel:”I don’t have enough milk, my baby is starving.”
You think, with all the reason because your breasts are not leaking, because your baby keeps wanting to feed constantly.

But while you are thinking that your body may have let you down now, he is producing the most tiny but rich liquid in the world!

⭐️ COLOSTRUM ⭐️
‼️The magical and underestimated, colostrum.‼️
👉🏻 I really believe that due to the misunderstanding of this wonderful beginning, many mums who would like to breastfeed give up during the first two to three days before the transitional breast milk takes over after 2 to 3 days for the next 2 weeks.
‼️ Colostrum is an amazing liquid, impossible to reproduce even by the most innovative pharmaceutical company.
. ☝🏻Because as a mum nature even from the first second after you gave birth to your baby, the mum’s brain is focused on nourishing her baby, loving her baby, protecting him and provide of everything that she can.
‼️The misunderstanding came when quantity lost the battle to quality.
👉🏻 Mum squeezed her breast expecting a bit flow but nothing or just a tiny drop come out.
👉🏻 Suddenly mum realised.. this is not enough!! So artificial milk in many cases took over. ‼️

‼️A newborn’s baby tummy can only hold about 2 tablespoon of fluids. That’s all that he needs!

👉🏻 This is why they just need a little colostrum the first few days.
👉🏻 As the mother’s milk supply increases, so does her baby’s stomach.
❤️ Trust your body!!
⁉️How was the beginning for you🤱🏼 ?

BRAIN AND BIRTH ♥️.

☺️ Hi I’m Ruth, the midwife behind @bumptobabyacademy, join me for a daily post.

⭐️ We use to believe that we give birth with our vagina.. but that, it’s wrong.

👉🏻 Let me just put this in another perspective.
‼️We give birth through our vagina (in case of a vaginal birth), but the main organ responsible for birth is quite far away of the vagina.. it’s the brain.
☝🏻More precisely the hypothalamus, that is where this hormone responsable for the uterine contractions is produced.

♥️ If you are looking for a birth preparation, check out the antenatal-hypnobirthing course that I have prepared with so much love for you.

⚠️ No oxytocin... no vaginal birth.. Our brain is the engine of the rest of our body.
⭐️ Oxytocin as the rest of the hormones is necessary to start and keep the process of birth are working following just one aim.. to bring your baby into your arms, but just with one condition! Your brain has to feel that this is the right place to make that happen.
⭐️ Your brain will never let your body birth your baby, your most precious thing that you have grown for sooo long if he thinks that the baby will not be safe.
‼️ Help your brain to have the feeling that yes, now my baby can come to me, my baby’s safe! .
Here a few tips:
👉🏼 Education and preparation are really important.
👉🏻 Dimmed lights .
👉🏻 Quite and relax environment, music, nice images around you..
👉🏻 Surround yourself with positivity and love, welcome kisses, massage, smiles..
👉🏻 Believe in the process of birth, everything is perfectly designed to work in harmony.
👉🏻 Focus on something, breathing techniques is a wonderful thing!
👉🏻 Listen to your body, follow what he says.
👉🏻 And enjoy! This experience will be printed for ever in your brain.. make the best of this! .

BUMP SIZE AND BABY GROWTH

☺️ Hi I’m Ruth, the midwife behind @bumptobabyacademy, join me for a daily post.
.
Welcome to the most common topic in every preggo’s life! THE SIZE OF YOUR BUMP 😭😭😭.
Yes, something that in other circumstances nobody would ever dare to talk about is the size of your tummy, once you are pregnant, it seems mandatory! 🤷🏻‍♀️
.
These kind of comments... you look huge! 🙄, are you expecting twins? 😫 or on the other hand, wow you are so tiny! 😭😭, can be really annoying and also the source of worries for you.
You may think that your baby is going to be huge or he is not growing enough ...
But the truth is that the size of your bump doesn’t always represent the size of your baby 🤗.

♥️ If you are looking for a birth preparation, check out the antenatal-hypnobirthing course that I have prepared with so much love for you.

⭐️ Your bump at some point is definitely getting bigger ...

.
⁉️How can we assess whether your baby is growing ok without the need of an ultrasound?
.

Thanks to the Fundal Height or McDonald's rule there is a way to try and estimate this
👉🏻 Fundal height is a tool for gauging fetal growth — it's not an exact science! 👉🏻 The aim is to check if baby is growing normally, from 24 weeks of gestation. .
‼️ The SFH measurement in centimetres should correspond to the number of weeks of gestation, with an allowance of a 2-cm difference either way.
👉🏻 The measure is from the top of the fundus (uterus) to the top of the symphysis pubis (bone).
⭐️ The measurement should be plotted on customised growth charts adjusted for maternal height, weight in early pregnancy, parity and ethnic origin.
👉🏻 A fetal growth scan should be offered if the first fundal height measurement is below the 10th centile on the customised chart or serial measurements have shown a slowing of growth.
⁉️ When your bump started to be quite obvious? 🤰🏻🤰🏽🤰🏼
⁉️ Did someone already commented about your bump size?
.

FEARS OF CHILDBIRTH

Believe it or not, fears surrounding birth are not innate and not every mum-to-be goes through this.
But for the women who are afraid of giving birth, it can be devastating, a real feeling that can have an impact on the whole pregnancy.
Comments like “so many women have done that before, why not you?” Can feel like a knife in your heart, because that makes you feel that the person who is telling you this, doesn’t really understand how deep your fears are.
You may feel that you are walking through a corridor that brings you to an end that is incredible scary for you.
.
♥️ If you are pregnant, check out the antenatal-hypnobirthing online course in bio ☺️ for an informed and better birth experience!
.
Slowly, slowly the fears are growing, knowing that there is no other way to meet your baby and each day you are closer to the event of stress (giving birth).

It’s impossible to ignore and to escape the fact once you are pregnant and get to the end you have to give birth.

This can be terrifying.

The unknown or the known due to previous experience, the negative comments that surrounds birth, the images that we have about birth may give the impression that birth may even happen as a punishment rather than a blessing.
This irrational fear makes you feel lonely, because nobody else is in your own body and only you can do that, give birth.
Some mums who are afraid try not to think much about it, others can’t even sleep or eat when the time is getting closer.
To all of you, to every mum-to-be who is feeling this way.
Remember, you are stronger than your fears.
You are meant to do this, in the same way that you are growing a baby inside of you, you are more than capable to give birth.
You and your baby are the perfect team.
You don’t have anything to prove! Talk and ask for help as much as you need.
Believe in you, that you are incredible and that birth can become the most rewarding act of love.
♥️ Prepare for birth is not a luxury, it’s a very important step to create a positive memory of this special time for the rest of your life..
⁉️If 0 is I’m not afraid and 10 I’m panicking where are you?
...

BLEEDING AFTER BIRTH .

.
☺️ Hi I’m Ruth, the midwife behind @bumptobabyacademy, join me for a daily post from pregnancy to baby care.

.
❤️ It is normal to bleed after you have a baby. The bleeding mainly comes from the area in your womb (uterus) where the placenta was attached, but it can also come from any cuts and tears caused during the birth. .
.
♥️ If you are pregnant, check out the antenatal-hypnobirthing online course in bio ☺️ for an informed and better birth experience!
.
👉🏻 Bleeding is usually heaviest just after birth and gradually becomes less over the next few hours. .
👉🏻 The bleeding will continue to reduce over the next few days. The colour will change from fresh red to brown over a few weeks. .
👉🏻 This bleeding is called the lochia and should stop by the time your baby is 6 weeks old. .
.
⭐️ You may notice the bleeding is redder and heavier when you breastfeed. This happens because breastfeeding makes your womb contract. You may also feel cramps similar to period pains.
Isn't a good idea to use tampons until after your 6-week postnatal check because they could increase your chance of getting an infection. .
.
‼️ If you're losing blood in large clots, tell your midwife. You may need some treatment.
VAGINAL BLOOD CLOTS AFTER BIRTH .
👉🏻 Passing clots of blood is common during the first two weeks after birth. (any type of birth)
👉🏻 The clot size can range from the size of a small pea, marble to a golf ball or larger.
👉🏻 Blood clots form when you are sitting or laying down for some period of time.
👍🏻 Typically the rule of thumb is that the clots should not be larger than a golf-ball size, larger clots than that require follow up with your midwife or doctor. .
⚠️ Clots size is not the only thing that you should monitor postnatally if you have prolonged red bleeding and clots after the first week postpartum and are experiencing pain
in your abdomen or have any sign of fever or chills, seek for medical assistance. .

👉🏻 Unfortunately this information is not always told by the health professional. Let spread knowledge mamas!! ❤️ .
.
⁉️Did you expect to bleed as you did? .

SELF SOOTHING

Hi! ☺️ I’m Ruth the midwife behind @bumptobabyacademy , join me for daily post!

I love this post from
@marissathemilkmom

Sleep trainers and "experts" will tout this as the secret to a good nights sleep. They will tell you this has to be taught. That you're doing your baby a favor!⠀

Sounds amazing right? But, it's crap. 🤷‍♀️⠀

Babies are not capable of "self-soothing." Let me explain....⠀

This term was coined in 1970 by Dr. Thomas Anders. Self-soothing, which actually means to to self-regulate your emotions. ⠀

When you're stressed, you use coping mechanisms, things to calm yourself down. Take some deep breaths, get a sip of water, talk to a loved one, get a hug.⠀

Babies cannot do this. This ability comes from the most mature part of the brain, which isn't fully matured until we're 25. ⠀

You can't force this part of the brain to mature. ⠀

It is normal and appropriate for babies to need the help of a parent or caregiver to down regulate from a state of heightened stress. To help them calm down enough to sleep. Most often this is done by sucking (nursing or pacifiers), rocking, shushing, etc. And no, these are not "bad habits" that need to be broken. ⠀

How do you sleep when you're upset? Can you fall asleep, on cue, when you are stressed out or anxious? ⠀

Some babies will be fine to be set down when they are in that calm, drowsy state, and drift off to sleep. But this is not the norm, and this is not self-soothing. ⠀

Leaving babies to cry does not teach them to settle, it teaches them to stop calling out. It shuts down their system to preserve energy. ⠀

Don't trust anyone who talks about babies "learning" to "self-soothe," this means they have no understanding of the emotional or psychological development of babies and young children.

THIRD STAGE- PLACENTA BIRTH .
.
☺️ Hi I’m Ruth, the midwife behind @bumptobabyacademy, join me for a daily post from pregnancy to baby care.
.
Yes!!! You gave birth to your baby and now??? And now you still have to give birth to the placenta 😬😱😳🥴.
❓What are the different options during this stage?
The third stage can be physiological or active management. .

❤️ If you are pregnant, check out the antenatal-hypnobirthing online course in bio ☺️ for an informed and better birth experience 🤩!

.
⭐️ Physiological process is when the placenta is delivered without any manoeuvre or any use of drug (utero tonic).
The third stage, in this case, usually lasts between 5 and 15 minutes, but any period up to 1 hour may be considered normal.
👍🏻 Advantages: It is not painful. This is a natural way to deliver the placenta.
👎🏻 Disadvantages: It may take longer to deliver the placenta. There is an increased risk of bleeding. .
.
⭐️ Active management of the third stage, an active management usually includes the routine prophylactic administration of uterotonic drug and/or the use of some manoeuvres as cord traction.
👍🏻 Advantages: The injection can help prevent heavy bleeding initially which some women may experience without it. It will shorten the time taken to deliver the placenta.
👎🏻 Disadvantages: It can make you feel sick, vomit and have a headache. Uterotonic are administer by an injection or infusion.
👉🏻 Consider to discuss previously with your midwife or include your option in the birth plan.
❓‼️ Have you already thought about what approach do you prefer?

Beautiful words by @this_mama_doodles

 ‘A baby born...is a baby birthed’

Some will say ,
How you were born ,
Means I did not give birth
But I know I did ,
I moved beyond the sun,
The moon, the earth
I lay my naked body,
Paralyzed upon on a table,
To be cut wide open ,
while wide awake ,
Wrapped in every colored cable
All to hear that first cry ,
To birth you out of danger,
I exposed myself,
Inside and out ,
To every single stranger

I got to feel your sticky skin ,
take in the sound of your roar ,
Whether you were born on an operating table ,
Or pushed out on the labour ward floor
In the days that followed ,
I could not breathe without a scream ,
My oozing wound reviewed ,
By the many faces of the medical team
There is no birth that comes easily,
Some are filled with joy,
Some filled with fear ,
I chose the road ,scars and all,
