PREGNANCY WORRIES

☺️ Hi I’m Ruth, the midwife behind @bumptobabyacademy, join me for a daily post from pregnancy to baby care.
.
🤰🏻A woman becomes a mother long before she has her baby in her arms.
🤰🏼Almost 10 months of pregnancy goes by with a rollercoaster of symptoms, emotions and only one wish that your baby is ok no matter how small or early he or she arrives.

♥️ If you are pregnant, check out the antenatal-hypnobirthing online course in bio ☺️ for an informed and better birth experience!

🤔 The constant wondering how your baby is doing can be a very overwhelming feeling.
These are some thoughts that could cross your mind.
♥️ I love you so intensely that it hurts.
😓 I still cannot feel you and I don’t have any bump and that’s terrifying me, are you still there?
😕 I can’t stop thinking about you, wondering if my body is still giving you everything that you need every second of the day.
😌 Finally my bump is growing which is reassuring but is it enough big? They say I’m too tiny.
🙃 Are you ok in there? I wish I could see you now.
😳 Is it normal to have all these movements? Do you have hiccups again? I’m wondering if that’s ok.
😟 I checked in google, I didn’t like what I saw, I hope you are fine, I cannot imagine my life without you.
🥺 I woke up several times wondering when was the last time that I felt you.
😥 I am scared that something is going wrong.
🤔 How am I going to be as a mum?
How is the birth going to be?
♥️ Are you going to love me?
🤔 Are you ok? I wish I could have you already in my arms.
🤰🏾Pregnancy is an intense journey with millions of changes and one unique wish..the well-being of your baby.
😕 Some people may not understand all your worries, you might not be open with your thoughts or maybe people think you’re being paranoid.
Talk about it and if you need more reassurance then ask for an extra appointment with your provider. All these things will make you feel better on your journey.

Always trust your instincts ♥️ and try to keep positive to help make this journey a bit easier.

You are an incredible Mum already.

MOOD SWINGS DURING PREGNANCY .

☺️ Hi I’m Ruth, the midwife behind @bumptobabyacademy, join me for a daily post from pregnancy to baby care.

.
🤗 Are you happy and 2 minutes later you are crying 😭 and just when you realise you are laughing 😂 you were about to feel completely sad 😞?
.

If the answer is yes... you are not alone!
❤️ If you are pregnant, check out the antenatal-hypnobirthing online course in bio ☺️ for an informed and better birth experience, you are going to love it!! ♥️
.
📚 The American Pregnancy organisation gives this explanation about the reason behind these uncomfortable feelings.
. ⁉️What causes pregnancy mood swings?
👉🏼 Mood changes during pregnancy can be caused by physical stresses, fatigue, changes in your metabolism, or by the hormones estrogen and progesterone. .
👉🏼 Significant changes in your hormone levels can affect your level of neurotransmitters, which are brain chemicals that regulate mood. 👉🏼 Mood swings are mostly experienced during the first trimester between 6 to 10 weeks and then again in the third trimester as your body prepares for birth.
. 📚 What should I do to treat my mood swings? 🤣😱😭😆😫
👍🏻 It is important to understand that you are not alone; mood swings are just another aspect of the pregnancy experience.
🧘‍♀️ The following list includes ways to manage your stress level:
* Get plenty of sleep 💤 * Take a break during the day to relax 🙌🏽 yoga 🧘‍♀️ could be a very good helper ❤️!
* Get regular physical activity 👍🏽
* Eat well 🥗 * Spend time with your partner ❤️
* Take a nap.💤
* Go for a walk 👣
* Don’t be so hard on yourself .

NATURAL WAY TO BE IN LABOUR?
.
☺️ Hi I’m Ruth, the midwife behind @bumptobabyacademy, join me for a daily post from pregnancy to baby care.
.
☺️ Welcome to one of the most common questions daily on my DM! ☺️
I know my lovely mamas 🤰🏼🤰🏽🤰🏻🤰🏾, you want, YOU NEED !! Your baby out!! I have been there 3 times 😬😬😬.

♥️ If you are pregnant, check out the 8h antenatal-hypnobirthing online course in bio ☺️ for an informed and better birth experience.

📚 But unfortunately there are not many studies big enough to support any of these theories... but let’s see what the myths surrounding this topics say about ☺️.
👉🏻 Let’s open the discussion... is there a natural way to “push “ let nature take place?
.
🤓 Childbirth experts don't think most at-home methods work 😭.
.
‼️Here are some of the widely found suggestions to naturally trigger labour..
🔆Important to consider!
* Natural induction should only be a helping hand. The method should be gentle enough to ensure you won’t go into labour if your body isn’t ready.
* Induction is not recommended before 39-40 weeks.

👉🏻 Nipple Stimulation .
👉🏻 Sex
👉🏻 Acupuncture stimulates the release of oxytocin in the body. In a 2013 randomized trial in Denmark, more than 400 women were given acupuncture, membrane stripping, or both procedures before labor.
There were no significant differences in the outcomes of the groups, but the vast majority of these women did not require medical inductions.
👉🏻 Castor oil (2 ounces in a glass of orange juice or mixed with ice cream). The side effects are nausea, explosive diarrhea, and dehydration. Spice Food have the same reason behind.
👉🏻 Walk
👉🏻 Relax 👍🏼 in order to avoid adrenaline and bring oxytocin ♥️.
👉🏻 Warm bath and visualisation .
.
❓Myth or real stuff.. ❓
Sometimes the best thing is do nothing and hide from everyone who nicely has something to say.. .
👩🏻‍⚕️ The best idea will be discussing with your provider about your individual case and the best for you 2 🤰🏼👶🏻.
.
⭐️ Did you try any of them with success?

👉🏻 Drinking and eating is so important to keep the energy up!
.
👉🏻 Trust in the process of birth, in yourself and in your baby.
.
👉🏻 Listen to your body, move the way your body is telling you. .

DUE DATE IS THE 96% CHANCE THAT YOU ARE NOT GOING TO HAVE THE BABY THAT DAY.
.
☺️ Hi I’m Ruth, the midwife behind @bumptobabyacademy, join me for a daily post from pregnancy to baby care.

📆 How do we calculate the due date?
👉🏼 It’s first calculated by using the date of her last period and adding 280 days, or 40 weeks.
👉🏼 That is followed by an ultrasound scan where another estimate is made, based on the size of the foetus.
.
♥️ If you are pregnant, check out the antenatal-hypnobirthing online course in bio ☺️ for an informed and better birth experience!
.
⁉️What are the chances to have my baby that day?
👉🏼 The estimation is about 4.4% 😱 (pretty low 🥴)
👶🏻👶🏽👶🏼 60% of babies are born within a week either side of the estimated date of delivery.
‼️More than 90% are born two weeks either side of the predicted date‼️
.
⁉️ So what’s the point of the due date then?
👉🏼 The main purpose of the due date is to "define a metric for the care" of the mother during pregnancy.
"So, for example, to interpret early pregnancy blood tests for the risk of i.e. congenital anomalies, it's important to know how far gone the pregnancy is."
.
‼️The due date is just a date which helps us to determine the other milestones in pregnancy, that’s all ☺️♥️.
⁉️ Was your baby born on her/his due date? How far from the due date was yours born?
⁉️ Have you shared the exact date of your due date? (Or better not 😭😭 ?!, people might become a little annoying about it when the date is approaching 🤫...).

PLEASE TEXT BEFORE STOPPING BY
☺️ Hi I’m Ruth, the midwife behind @bumptobabyacademy, join me for a daily post from pregnancy to baby care.
.
📞 Do not call me, do not stop by, do not try to convince me of your own beliefs, do not criticize my decisions, do not think that you are not important because you are not my priority right now.
♥️ But stay by my side, do not leave me now that I am adapting my life to a new state, be patient with me , listen to me without judging me and understand that right now I am not exactly who I was.
👶🏻 Motherhood is the most isolated period for many of us, it is a tsunami of emotions in which you want people to support you, but it is difficult to find the right time to do it.
👧🏽 It is isolated because no one wants to hear about the intensity that you are going through.
😌 You lose many people on the way to motherhood, but you will meet new ones, it is a process of evolution of your own life, and that can make you sad.
🙂 But the truth is, nothing will overshadow for a second the moment you met your baby and that's what really matters.
♥️ Motherhood passed through my life as if it was a hurricane, moving everything, making the unnecessary disappear, leaving me smaller but also stronger, and giving a new meaning to my life, my children.
❤️ There is nothing left that is worth more, and even my body does not even fully belong to me anymore, there is no place where I go, there is no time of day when motherhood does not direct my life.
💙 A mess, as sad as happy, as powerful as weak, tired but incredibly proud of myself, defenceless for the vulnerability that makes you love your children so much, but with more force than ever, defiant in the face of everything that gets in the way of happiness of those who are the priority in my life ... them ... my children.
⭐️I am not who I used to be, but I love what I have become after having my children.
⁉️How has motherhood changed your life?
⁉️Can you see yourself in any of these 2 amazing drawings?

NEWBORN FIRST BATH 🛁 .
👉🏻These are the recommendations about the new-born first bath by The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).
.
👉🏻 Newborns don't need a bath every day. They rarely sweat or get dirty enough to need a full bath that often.
.
🛁 Three baths per week during baby's first year may be enough. Bathing more frequently can dry out your baby's skin.
.
🧽 Only give your newborn sponge baths until the stump of the umbilical cord falls off, which usually happens by about one or two weeks of age. .
🛁 Fill the basin with 2 inches of water that feels warm—not hot—to the inside of your wrist or elbow.
.
👉🏻 If you're filling the basin from the tap, turn the cold water on first (and off last) to avoid scalding yourself or your child. .
🧼 Soaps can dry out your baby's skin. If a cleanser is needed for heavily soiled areas, use only mild, neutral-pH soaps without additives. 👉🏻 NHS guidelines recommendation “Don't add any liquid cleansers to the bath water. Plain water is best for your baby's skin in the first month”
. 👉🏻 Use a soft cloth to wash your baby's face and hair, being careful not to scrub or tug the skin. Massage her entire scalp gently, including the area over her fontanelles (soft spots).
.
👉🏻 Wash the rest of her body from the top down.
. 👉🏻 You can bath your baby at any time of the day. And it’s best to avoid bathing your baby when he’s hungry or straight after a feed.
👉🏻 When bath time is finished, promptly wrap a towel around your baby's head and body to help her stay warm while she is still wet. .

MYTH!! YOU WON’T BE ABLE TO BREASTFEED UNLESS YOU DO IT STRAIGHT AWAY.
.
☺️ Hi I’m Ruth, the midwife behind @bumptobabyacademy, join me for a daily post from pregnancy to baby care.

🤱When we talk about breastfeeding there is not just a “now or never”!
.
🤱For some reason sometimes breastfeeding during the first few hours or days after birth is not a possibility, but this doesn’t mean that breastfeeding is over...
.
♥️ If you are pregnant, check out the antenatal-hypnobirthing online course in bio ☺️ for an informed and better birth experience!
.
👉🏻 This is one of the amazing things that I had the pleasure to work with during my years with Doctors Without Borders.
👉🏻 When suddenly we lost a mum in the first days after birth, there was no option to keep artificial feeding. .
👉🏻 This was due to the lack of artificial milk, without any possibility for the family to buy it even if they could afford it, which rarely was the case. Inadequate sterile conditions to bottle feed were also a risk factor to consider.
⭐️ Most of the times grandma takes over in these sad cases, providing the only way to survive for the baby, breastfeeding.
👉🏻 We used this technique. We attached a nasogastric tube to the nipple with the end in a cup with artificial milk.
⭐️ While the baby was sucking grandma’s breast, the baby gets artificial milk, and the grandma’s brain starts to “wake up”, hormones start to flow again and after 4 to 5 weeks doing the same technique, reducing slowly slowly the quantity of artificial milk in the cup, grandma and baby can be discharged from the malnutrition program.
👉🏻 This grandma can provide enough breast milk as if she would have given birth to her grandson.
‼️I’m talking about a lady that may not breastfeed for years and years, but her body didn’t forget how to provide the golden liquid.
‼️
❤️ This is real, this safes many babies life over there, and this could be possible for many mothers who would love to breastfeed their babies.
🤱So before to give up, if you would like to keep going, just get the all perspectives and ask for more options.
⁉️ Were you aware about this technique?
⁉️ Did you ever imagine that this was possible?

SEX DURING PREGNANCY
.
☺️ Hi I’m Ruth, the midwife behind @bumptobabyacademy, join me for a daily post from pregnancy to baby care.

💋 Sex is safe during pregnancy in most of the cases.
.
🤭 It's normal for your sex drive to change during pregnancy.

♥️ If you are pregnant, check out the antenatal-hypnobirthing online course in bio ☺️ for an informed and better birth experience!

💋If your pregnancy is normal and you have no complications, having sex and orgasms won't increase your risk of going into labour early or cause a miscarriage.
.
💋Later in pregnancy, an orgasm or even sex itself can set off mild contractions. If this happens, you'll feel the muscles of your womb go hard.
💋 These are known as Braxton Hicks contractions and can be uncomfortable, but they're perfectly normal and there's no need for alarm.
👩🏻‍⚕️ Please seek for assistance if you are worried about anything during your pregnancy and to discuss your individual circumstances regarding to this or other topics.

MY NEWBORN SLEEPS ONLY DURING DAY TIME!!

.
☺️ Hi I’m Ruth, the midwife behind @bumptobabyacademy, join me for a daily post from pregnancy to baby care.

😭Yes, it’s not uncommon, and yes you are maybe running a bit crazy and this is uncommon neither! ☺️
.
❓Why is he/she doing that?
👉🏻 Our circadian rhythm is roughly a 24-hour cycle that drives our sleep and wakefulness periods. . .

♥️ If you are pregnant, check out the antenatal-hypnobirthing online course in bio ☺️ for an informed and better birth experience!

. 👉🏻 It is largely influenced by variations in light. . . 📚 Briefly, light release a hormone called cortisol, which helps to feel awake.
When there is an absence of light, these cells release melatonin, a hormone that makes us feel sleepy.
. ☝🏻In utero, the baby’s circadian rhythm is linked to maternal hormones, but once baby is born, she has to rely on her own biological clock, which takes time ‼️. .
⭐️ The baby’s own circadian rhythm generally kicks in around 3-4 months of age.

🧐 What can you do to help with this situation?
🙃 In fact, and because things take time, more than focus on how to “train your newborn“ it will be “how to adapt yourself to this”
BABY
👶🏾 Pay close attention to sleep cues, including drowsy eyes, yawning and fussiness; they’re how your baby communicates that she’s ready to go back to sleep, even if she hasn’t been awake for very long.
👎🏼 What not to do? Keep your baby awake all day, thinking it will make her sleep better at night.
YOU 🤱🏻🤱🏾🤱🏼
😴 Don’t hesitate to nap during the day, so you can manage the night shift.
🤚🏽The impulse to get things done during the day is a strong one, but maybe reconsider how you want to spend the time that your baby is 😴 during the day.
🙋🏻‍♀️Reach out for help from friends or family (if possible ).
☕️ Resist the urge to keep yourself awake with caffeine during the day and try to sleep (if possible).
🙌🏽 Patience, your baby is absolutely ok, you are a wonderful mom, this is a a (very tiring time) that will finish soon.
❓How did you “survive” those firsts weeks?
⁉️How long took your baby to adapt to day and night routine?
❓ What helped you best?

INSOMNIA DURING 🤰IS REAL 😫!!
.
☺️ Hi I’m Ruth, the midwife behind @bumptobabyacademy, join me for a daily post from pregnancy to baby care.

. 🙄 Insomnia means you have difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or both.
🤰🏽During pregnancy it tends to be more common in the first 🤰🏼 and third trimesters 🤰🏼.
.
♥️ If you are pregnant, check out the antenatal-hypnobirthing online course in bio ☺️ for an informed and better birth experience!

. 😫 Insomnia is quite common and you might feel miserable, but the good news, it’s not harmful to your baby! 👍🏻 👶🏻.
.
🌜Here a few things that may help you to have more restful nights 😴.
. 🥛Drink plenty of water throughout the day, but minimize drinking after 7 p.m!
.
🍴Eating an early dinner can also help, but don’t go to bed hungry 😋, before to go to bed eat a light snack!
.
📺 Avoid screen time at least an hour before bed. Blue light from the TV, mobile, can have an impact in your circadian rhythm. 📚 Read a book instead.
. 🛁 Taking a soothing bath might also make you sleepy
.
🌚 Keep your room cool, dark, and quiet for optimal sleeping conditions
.
🛌 Lie on your side, tuck a pillow between your knees, and use one under your belly as it gets bigger.

FIRST PERIOD AFTER PREGNANCY
.
☺️ Hi I’m Ruth, the midwife behind @bumptobabyacademy, join me for a daily post from pregnancy to baby care.
.
Every woman is different and every PP period even for the same woman is different as well.

⁉️When will my periods start again after pregnancy?
.
🍼 If you bottle feed your baby, or combine bottle feeding with breastfeeding, your first period could start as soon as 5 to 6 weeks after you give birth.
.
♥️ If you are pregnant, check out the antenatal-hypnobirthing online course in bio ☺️ for an informed and better birth experience!
.
🤱🏽 If you fully breastfeed (including at night) without any bottle feeding, your periods may not start again until you stop breastfeeding, or until you stop night-time breastfeeding.
🤷🏻‍♀️ Or much earlier than that...
🤱🏼This is because the hormone that causes your body to make breast milk can stop your body making the hormones that control your periods.
🩸 You first period may be different from how your period was before.
You may have:
* 😳 irregular periods – especially if it returns while you're breastfeeding
* 😖 cramping – this may be worse 😫 or better 👍🏼 than before you were pregnant
* 🩸🩸🩸heavier periods
* 🧐 small blood clots in your periods.

YOU ARE THE EVERYTHING OF A LITTLE HUMAN BEING.
.
I couldn’t reach the toy.⠀

I reached out my hands but they couldn’t make it,⠀

I don’t know how to crawl just yet.⠀

So I looked around for you and cried, and there you came.⠀

I heard your voice say “You want that toy” as you moved it back to me, and I rested in the truth that you come when I call.⠀

Mama, ⠀

I know you get tired of my cries. It feels like cry for everything right now.⠀

I don’t know how to say “I need the toy” or most importantly “I need you” so I cry instead.⠀

Mama,⠀

It’s not a reflection of how I feel about you.⠀

I love you, that’s why I cry for you.⠀

I need you, that’s why I cry for you.⠀

I know you can’t always get to me right away, that’s ok.⠀

I love hearing your voice saying “I hear you, I’ll be there soon” as I wait for you.⠀

Mama, ⠀

I can’t wait for the day I can tell you how I feel.⠀

How in your arms I feel safe.⠀

How you are my fortress, my rock.⠀

How I find comfort in your voice, your body, and your presence.⠀

But right now I can’t,⠀

So when I need you I cry.⠀

Mama, ⠀

I see your tears too.⠀

I know it can be hard.⠀

In my short life we’ve already been through so much together, and I know we will get through this too.⠀

I know you don’t always feel like you are doing good, but mama you are more than just good, you are mine. ⠀

Mama,⠀

I love you.⠀

So tonight if I cry, know I don’t expect you to get it right, right away.⠀

I know you are trying to learn me, just as I’m trying to learn this world around me.⠀

Mama, we will get through this.⠀

One day at a time,⠀

One minute at a time,⠀

One cry at a time.⠀

⁉️ How many times have you heard .. don't hold him so much .. don't go every time he cries .. you're going to spoil him!

So beautiful words from @ourmamavillage.

DRIP - DROP FEEDING TECHNIQUE 💧
.
☺️ Hi I’m Ruth, the midwife behind @bumptobabyacademy, join me for a daily post from pregnancy to baby care.

This is one of the many techniques used to achieve breastfeeding when things are not straight away for any reason.
There are much more tips like this that I will share in the following post.
.
Wonderful technique by @draari .
👉🏻 This technique consists in letting milk drip, either formula or breast milk extracted on the breast so that it reaches the baby's mouth and make it believe that it comes out of its suction.
.
♥️ If you are pregnant, check out the antenatal-hypnobirthing online course in bio ☺️ for an informed and better birth experience!
.
👉🏻 When is it used?
💧 In nipple confusion or relactation because the child is used to more milk flow through the bottle and we make him believe that he continues with that flow, while we get him to suck the breast.
💧In cases of low production or adoption, to stimulate more suction on the part of the baby.
‼️Remember that the more suction more production.
.
👉🏻 This case is a 8-day-old baby who had nipple confusion due to the use of a bottle and dummy , sucked well but was frequently released, so she managed to make a complete feed without pauses.
.
❓Did you know about this technique ❓⭐️

ONCE YOU ARE IN LABOUR.. WHEN IS TIME TO GO! 🏥
.
☺️ Hi I’m Ruth, the midwife behind @bumptobabyacademy, join me for a daily post from pregnancy to baby care.

‼️This information may drastically change from 🤰🏻to 🤰🏽.‼️
👉🏻 Here is some GENERAL advice, but you should discuss all this with your midwife who is responsible for your individual care for the big day.
.
♥️ If you are pregnant, check out the antenatal-hypnobirthing online course in bio ☺️ for an informed and better birth experience!
.
🧐 Things to consider:
- Number of pregnancy. Is it your first baby? If that’s the case, most of the times labour is longer and the bigger part of labour is the latent phase (from 0-4cm). In normal circumstances (if there is no other indication or problem) the best place to be for this period is at home.
‼️- The AVERAGE! can range from 6h to 2-3 days 😳for a first time mum to reach at least 4 cm of dilatation.
- For a second or consecutive🤰🏽if you’re previous birth was vaginal, and less that 5 years ago, birth tends to be quicker. You may adopt the rule 1-7-1 (1 contraction every 7 minutes for at least 1 hour) as a point to decide when to go to the hospital.
‼️- Previous birth experience(s) is going to be crucial to make a better “action plan”. ⁉️ What happens if I go to early to the hospital?
- If everything looks good and you are not in active labour (from 4cm dilatation), in most of the cases you are going to be sent home again.
🙁- This back and forth can have a huge impact on your oxytocin production levels and the process of birth may stop completely or slow down for some time.
🏡 Home is the best place to be during the latent phase while the contractions are still irregular and your body still has a long way to go.
💪🏻The latent phase is the most challenging one, especially for first time 🤰🏻.
.
⚠️Do not ignore warnings signs! And contact and pop up anytime at the hospital 🏥, if you have any of those or other worries.
.
⁉️Did you arrive to early to the hospital or just in time?
⁉️ How was your pattern of contractions when you decided to go to the hospital?
⁉️Who is due soon???

♥️ In the Central African Republic (Batangafo) once a mom gave birth and they got to a community place where new mums and babies stayed for the first months.
🛏 The place was really basic, just beds in an open big tent.
🤱🏽 The new mom got everything she needed, food, some rest from her daily duties (which there were a lot), company of other moms, and support 24/7 for the first month.
👍🏼 Everything is free and it’s run by other women of the community. Men also help providing food and with other activities. Dads do visit newborns and moms as much as they want.
🤱🏽Some mums goes home at night and come back the following day, but most of them stay day and night.
♥️ I loved it m, I just loved it !!
🤱🏻Motherhood from 🤰🏼pregnancy onwards can feel really isolated, that’s why I have decided to start at the beginning of each month a post so we can become a little mama community ... and try to help each others or just express ourselves.
♥️ A healthy place where we can exchange experiences of the journey of pregnancy and motherhood.

🌟UMBILICAL CORD
.
☺️ Hi I’m Ruth, the midwife behind @bumptobabyacademy, join me for a daily post from pregnancy to baby care.

🤰🏻During pregnancy the umbilical cord connects the baby to the placenta. It brings oxygenated blood to 👶🏽 baby, effectively acting as their lungs. .

.
♥️ The umbilical cord consists of two arteries and one vein covered by a special connective tissue known as Wharton’s Jelly. .
🤩 After birth the cord begins to dry and harden, becoming brittle. The stump will turn yellow-green, then brown and finally black.
📚This process is called dry gangrene.
.
😳 Many parents are a little grossed out by this process, and many also worry that it is getting infected. So how do you care for the stump?
.
👍🏼 Mostly, do absolutely nothing! Give it as much air as possible, so make sure the nappy is folded down underneath it. The air will help it dry out quicker and fall off sooner. ‼️Don't immerse your baby in water and get it wet, as although this won't strictly do any harm, it will delay the drying out process.
.
🧐 It is normal for it to look a bit oozy around the base as it separates, and it may bleed a tiny bit. Once the cord has fallen off, the belly button will form another scab which will heal just like any other wound.
.
⚠️Do seek advice if the skin around the umbilicus is red or inflamed‼️
.
⁉️how long did it take to fall off your baby’s stump?
⁉️do you still keep it somewhere?
